Oregon Penitentiary Inmate with Autism Dies

http://tinyurl.com/6u5jcoo

The Oregon State Penitentiary may have failed to give services and appropriate supervision to an inmate with autism. Of interest in this article is the fact that over the next few years more children with autism will be joining the adult ranks.

We all know that with the "three strikes you're out" law, poor education for children with autism, lack of funds, and lack of general supports and services in the state of Oregon, this problem will only get worse.

The NW Regional ESD in Hillsboro opened a center to train teachers and serve about 500 students. 2 dozen have autism. The ESD took 4.3 million in federal stimulus to purchase and remodel a former school. This center will train teachers both at the center and online to work with students with disabilities up to age 21.

Okay, so this article isn't about Oregon. But it does point out that Kathy Henley's dream of an autism center can happen. It happened in the small town of Joplin, MO - yes, the town devastated by a hurricane in 2011. This town of 50,000 received a 3 million dollar donation to rebuild their autism center.

Behavior Analysts Rebell Against Board of Examiners of Psychologists in WV

Some time ago, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), changed requirements for Associate Behavior Analysts (BCABA). It required them to have supervision by a full Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This is why I dropped my certification after paying $6000 and spending a year and a half getting certified.

The U.S. Senate last night voted the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act (CARA) out of Congress by unanimous consent and on to the President's desk. The U.S. House of Representatives approved the bill, HR.2005, last week. CARA would authorize a total of $693 million on continued biomedical and treatment research on autism and require further development of an overall strategic plan for the intensification, expansion and better coordination of federal efforts designed to help persons with autism and their families.
